Chicken Wings Sauce – Huli Huli

Huli Huli Sauce brings the sweet, savory, and tropical flavors of Hawaii to chicken wings. Fresh ginger, garlic, pineapple juice, soy sauce, and brown sugar create a rich teriyaki-like sauce with plenty of flavor, while ketchup adds body and a little tang.

This sauce was originally used as a marinade, but the sugar can cause it to burn when the wings are cooked. We found it works better as a finishing sauce, tossed with hot cooked wings after they come off the grill, oven, or air fryer. Serve the wings with fresh pineapple slices for an extra taste of the tropics.

Course: Rubs, Seasonings, Sauces
Servings: 4
Calories: 451kcal
A sweet, savory, tropical Huli Huli sauce made with pineapple juice, soy sauce, brown sugar, fresh ginger, and garlic. Use it as a finishing sauce for cooked chicken wings to avoid the sugar burning during cooking.

Ingredients

Huli Huli Sauce

  • 1 cup unsweetened pineapple juice
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • ½ cup soy sauce
  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar
  • ⅓ cup ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons fresh ginger peeled and grated
  • 1½ teaspoons garlic finely chopped
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt

For Serving

  • 1 fresh pineapple peeled and cut into approximately ½-inch slices

Instructions

  • Prepare the chicken wings using the Basic Chicken Wings recipe and your preferred cooking method.
  • While the wings are cooking, combine the pineapple juice, chicken broth, soy sauce, brown sugar, ketchup, ginger, garlic, and kosher salt in a bowl. Mix well.
  • Once the wings are fully cooked, transfer them to a large bowl.
  • Pour the Huli Huli sauce over the hot wings and toss until evenly coated.
  • Serve immediately with fresh pineapple slices.

Notes

This sauce was originally used as a marinade. However, the sugar can cause the sauce to burn during cooking, so it works better as a finishing sauce for cooked chicken wings.
If using a sheet pan to cook the wings, turn the pieces over about halfway through cooking.
