The 5-Step Homemade Method
- For maximum crunch and a fluffy interior, follow this prep method popularized by chefs:
Cut:
- Slice 2-3 Russet potatoes into even 1/4 to 1/2-inch thick strips. All should be approx. the same size.
Soak:
- Soak the cut potatoes in cold water for 20-30 minutes to draw out excess starches (this prevents burning).
Dry:
- Drain and thoroughly pat the fries completely dry with a paper towel.
Toss:
- Coat with 1 tablespoon of cooking oil (such as olive or vegetable oil) and season with salt.
Cook:
- Air fry in a single layer (don’t overcrowd) at 350° F for 13 minutes. Then, toss the fries, crank the temperature to 400° F, and cook for another 15 minutes until deeply golden and crispy.
Notes
Tips for the Best Texture
• Avoid Overcrowding: Only fill your air fryer basket about halfway. If fries are piled too high, they will steam and become soggy rather than crispy.
• Shake Frequently: Pull the basket out and give the fries a vigorous shake every 4-5 minutes to ensure hot air reaches all sides. Cooking Frozen Fries
If you are using store-bought frozen French fries, the process is much quicker as they are already pre-cooked.
• Cook at 400° F for about 15–20 minutes.
• Shake the basket halfway through.
• Add a few extra minutes if you prefer them extra crispy.
